Labor Day Eat-In
In the fall of 2009, the USC Childhood Obesity Research Center partnered with Slow Food Los Angeles in organizing the Los Angeles Time for Lunch Campaign to lobby for changes to the school lunch program through reform of the Child Nutrition Act. As part of a national day of action on Labor Day to raise awareness and unify the community, CORC and Slow Food LA organized six community “Eat-ins”, or potlucks with a purpose, across the city. In addition to playing an instrumental role in the organization of the overall campaign, CORC led the largest of the Los Angeles Eat-ins, which took place at the Milagro Allegro Community Garden in Highland Park. The event included live music, activities to encourage youth and family empowerment, and speeches from Councilmember Ed Reyes, CORC Director Michael Goran, and youth leaders from Homegirl Café. In conjunction with the Time for Lunch campaign, CORC has led local youth in writing over 300 letters to Congress to ask for improvements in the school lunch program.
The Eat-In was a huge success! The Los Angeles efforts have become a national model for the Time for Lunch campaign, and the event was very well received in the Highland Park neighborhood. Local community members have called the Highland Park Eat-in the best thing to happen in their neighborhood that they can remember.
